Autonomous driving

Just imagine the following situation: You get into a car and just sit back and relax because the vehicle drives autonomously. It authenticates you via iris scan and face recognition, adjusts the car to suit your requirements – and you even need to do nothing at all while driving around. The self-driving car detects other road users, even brakes autonomously in challenging situations – and can communicate with other road users. Only fantasy? No, this scenario might become a reality in the not so distant future.

OSRAM is already developing lighting systems today which take us closer to the car of the future. Not only is visual light playing a key role, but also invisible light for the vehicle sensors. Light now has a new meaning in the context of autonomous driving.

Not only does LiDAR extend the range of high-beam headlights thanks to multi-mode laser diodes that make driving during nighttime hours easier or high-performance lamps with maximum light output – this future-oriented technology brings about decisive progress also: Just like radar, it is able to detect objects, and measure distances and speeds. LiDAR enables visual communication with other road users via DMD systems that project symbols onto the road in HD quality using Oslon Boost HX automotive projection LEDs from OSRAM.
New lighting concepts adapt the light to the environment, taking driving to a new level.
